TROY, N.Y. – Fresenius Kidney Care, the dialysis division of Fresenius Medical Care North America and the nation’s leading network of dialysis facilities, hosted a grand opening and ribbon cutting ceremony today at their newly constructed dialysis clinic at 16 North Greenbush Road in Troy.

This is Fresenius Kidney Care’s eighth kidney treatment clinic in the Capital Region and first in Rensselaer County, empowering patients to thrive and live the healthiest, fullest way possible – with kidney disease treatments that fit in with life, not the other way around.

The new Troy facility is also collaborating with Seamless PD, a method of peritoneal dialysis that makes home dialysis a viable first option for more patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD). The program was developed by physician Vincent Carsillo and surgeon Michael Gallichio with Capital District Renal Physicians (CDRP) using an innovative technique that enables patients to recover from surgery faster and take control of their treatment plan.

The more than 8,100 square-foot space allows for the treatment of up to 72 in-center hemodialysis patients each week. This will enable Fresenius Kidney Care’s local team of expert medical professionals to better serve the Rensselaer County area’s dialysis patients, in collaboration with CDRP. The facility will also serve as a training center for home dialysis patients. Patients who opt for home therapy will undergo a week-long training to assure they are comfortable, and maintain access to a nurse on-call at all times.

Fresenius Kidney Care currently serves more than 750 patients in the Capital Region. Nineteen percent of these patients receive dialysis at home. Despite evidence suggesting that up to 93 percent of incident patients do not have any medical contraindications for home dialysis, less than 8 percent of dialysis patients receive care at home. The Fresenius Kidney Care Troy team will strive to increase awareness and to educate new patients on different dialysis treatment modalities and to help them select the option that is best for them.

“Our renal network creates a meaningful connection between providers, practitioners and members of the community by utilizing a local RN admissions coordinator who regularly reviews and relays patients’ needs,” said Lane McCarthy, regional vice president, Fresenius Kidney Care. “Coupled with the activities and support of the hospital patient service managers, our team of providers collaborates to create a smooth transition for new incident ESRD patients.”

“We consider home therapies to be a great first option for our patients and use this program to allow our patients the ability to thrive at home,” said Dr. Carsillo. “We are ready and able to care for new and existing dialysis patients for in-center and home therapies. We look forward to serving our community and caring for our neighbors through this new clinic in Troy.”

Fresenius Kidney Care will be hiring staff at this new location. Job listings are posted online here. A Fresenius Kidney Care facility in Latham is also expected to open in the coming months.

“Ensuring that individuals have access to the best quality medical care so they can live healthier lives is vitally important,” said Senator Kathy Marchione. “I commend Fresenius Kidney Care for their continued commitment to health care innovation evidenced by today’s grand opening of this impressive new clinic that will help Rensselaer County families and improve the quality of health care across our Capital Region.”

“It is great to see Fresenius Kidney Care open its first unit in Rensselaer County,” said Assemblymember John T. McDonald III. “Fresenius recognizes the importance of not only an onsite location but also the desire for individuals to have access to treatment at home which indicates why they are a leader in their field. This increased access to kidney disease treatments will allow patients in the area to flourish while still maintaining the highest level of care.”

“Rensselaer County has long been home to innovation and advancement, including in the field of medicine and health care. We are excited to see Fresenius Kidney Care provide new avenues of care for those living in Rensselaer County and the Capital Region, and recognize Fresenius’ decision to grow here in the county,” said Rensselaer County Executive Steve McLaughlin.

“Fresenius Kidney Care is a welcome addition to the North Greenbush community and a worthwhile investment from every prospective,” said Lou Desso, supervisor, Town of North Greenbush. “I’d like to thank them for establishing this beautiful facility and enriching the Route 4 Corridor, but more importantly, for meeting the needs of our residents living with kidney failure in a most convenient fashion. We welcome you and look forward to having Fresenius as a community partner.”

“For more than 30 years, CDPHP has been committed to the health and economic vitality of the communities we serve,” said John D. Bennett, MD, president and CEO, CDPHP. “I applaud Fresenius Kidney Care for opening its first location in Rensselaer County to better meet the needs of dialysis patients in the area.”

One in seven adults will develop chronic kidney disease, with many not detecting the condition until they have lost more than 90 percent of their kidney function. More than 660,000 Americans live with ESRD, or kidney failure, which requires either a transplant or dialysis to remove waste from the blood, maintain safe levels of potassium and sodium and control blood pressure. Currently, 468,000 people in the U.S. depend on dialysis as a life-sustaining treatment. The leading causes of kidney disease are high blood pressure and diabetes.
